Claire Sullivan is a senior biology major with minors in political science and sustainability at the University of Dayton. At UD, she is one of the leaders of the Education Team at the Hanley Sustainability Institute where she designs lesson plans and oversees a team of student volunteers to promote sustainability education initiatives on campus. As a member of the River Stewards program, she promotes the program’s mission of implementing a widely shared vision for Dayton’s water resources through participating in constructive public conversations and educational outreach. As recognition for her leadership and commitment to being a change maker in the community, she was selected by UD’s President for the Newman Civic Fellowship program, a Campus Compact program that supports students who desire to be public problem solvers. Interested in art and storytelling as forms of advocacy, she is part of the 2020 Moral Courage Project, a human rights storytelling initiative working to share stories of individuals in the United States fighting for their right to water. Additionally, she was awarded the 2020 Herbenick Award by UD’s Core Academic Program which recognizes the student who best exemplifies the program’s commitment to interdisciplinary education. After graduation, Claire hopes to live and work internationally while exploring how environmental policy and water policy take shape around the world.
