Uzra Zeya is CEO and President of the Alliance for Peacebuilding (AfP), a network of 130+ organizations working to end violent conflict and sustain peace in 180+ countries. AfP pursues three lines of effort – Policy and Advocacy, Learning and Evaluation, and Partnerships and Public Engagement – to elevate its members’ collective influence, impact, and innovation.
Prior to joining AfP in January 2019, Ms. Zeya served as a senior American diplomat for over two decades, specialized in human rights, the Middle East and South Asia, European and multilateral affairs. As Charge d’Affaires at U.S. Embassy Paris, she helped bring U.S.-French cooperation to new levels on climate change, counterterrorism, and countering Russian malign influence. As Acting Assistant Secretary for Human Rights, Democracy and Labor, she oversaw a $400+ million foreign assistance budget, elevated defense of civil society, and led U.S. human rights dialogues with China and Egypt. Ms. Zeya also served as Chief of Staff to the Deputy Secretary of State, Deputy Executive Secretary for Secretaries Rice and Clinton, and overseas at U.S. embassies in India, Oman, Syria, Egypt, and Jamaica. She speaks French, Arabic, and Spanish and is the recipient of the Legion of Honor, France’s highest civilian honor.
